While it does seem a bit unlikely, it is entirely possible that Debbie Phillips, who ran on the Democratic ticket for state representative in the 92nd District, might become yet another politician who is forced to eat her own words. Phillips recently declared herself winner of the race over Jill Thompson, the Republican candidate, whom she was leading by a 170-vote margin last Wednesday. There are still 1,500 ballots to be counted, and the official winner will be declared Nov. 25.
However tempting it is to claim victory in hopes of forcing your opponent to admit defeat, it’s really a cheap political trick, fine for a partisan politician, but unbecoming of anyone who aspires to go above that and become a true stateswoman. Americans, despite their well-reasoned cynicism, still hope that their politicians want to serve their constituents.
If Phillips is in fact the winner and someday runs for re-election or a higher political office, hopefully she will have learned a lesson from this race: Presumption is unattractive, divisive and a little rude. Being classy during a recount — as Thompson has demonstrated — sends a much better message to the voters.

I am surprised the word "classy" is even listed in an article with Jill Thompson's name in it. I mean come on! How much money did the Republican party spend on mud slinging mail ads? I know I averaged at least 4 a week from them spreading bold faced lies about Debbie Phillips. Jill Thompson classy? I would say not from what I saw this election year.
